Understanding Your BMI Calculation

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m² where kg is a person's weight in kilograms and m² is their height in meters squared. Our calculator works for both men and women, with any unit system.

BMI Formula

The BMI calculation formula differs slightly depending on the units used:

  • Metric Formula: BMI = weight(kg) / height²(m²)
  • Imperial Formula: BMI = (weight(lb) / height²(in²)) × 703

Our calculator automatically handles the conversion so you can use either metric (kg, cm) or imperial (lb, ft) units.

What BMI Indicates

  • Below 18.5: You are underweight
  • 18.5 to 24.9: You have a healthy weight
  • 25 to 29.9: You are overweight
  • 30 or above: You are obese

BMI Limitations

BMI is an approximate measure of body fat and doesn't directly measure body fat. It may overestimate body fat in athletes with high muscle mass or underestimate it in older persons who have lost muscle.

Always consult a healthcare professional for a comprehensive health assessment.
